That’s right, it is back….multi-generational living! Like in the 19th century, families now in the 21st century are opting for multi-generational living for many reasons. Rather it is for grandparents moving in with their adult children to help care for their grandkids or those simply needing elderly care. On the flip side, it may also be adult children needing to live with their parents to help transition through paying off debt and/or saving to pay for a home of their own. No matter the reason, the home options for these scenarios are on the rise that make this type of construction more sought after.

Multi-generational housing is a growing trend that makes sense to many. It’s one way of reducing expenses — but those who have experience say it has multiple advantages, as well as some challenges for the family. It’s not just for mother-in-laws anymore! Many home builders in the area have caught on to this trend and have expanded their floor plan options to include more space as well as a more thought out layout as far as placement of additional space. When adding more space, some like Lennar Homes with their NextGen series, are putting in a completely separately living space that includes living, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and exterior entrance when allowed. Other builders have similar options of this “home within a home” without the additional series names, but incorporated into some of their floor plans.

Here’s one we featured one on a previous Walk-Thru Wednesday at the Estates at Shaddock Park by Village Builders, a Lennar company.

Fortunately, as times change, homes and floor plans evolve right along with them. If you’re wondering if that add-on bedroom will really someday help sell your home any faster, and if you’re questioning if there really is a house that you can buy with enough space to accommodate your parents or grown children, the answer is increasingly — yes.
