Property Tax Protest Changes HB 2228
During the 2017 Legislative Session, it was argued that Texas’ property tax system created taxpayer confusion as many different types of properties had differing deadlines. H.B. 2228 which amended the Tax Code (Section 41.44) streamlines the property tax process by changing deadlines for taking certain actions within that process. The one that most people will see as most significant if for filing a protest on your property assessment value.
Typically, notices were sent at beginning of May with a deadline to file your protest by the 30th. The new law adopted May 15th, or 30 days after the receipt of a Notice of Appraised Value, whichever is later as the deadline. So this year you should expect to see your new value around mid-April. So as soon as you get your income taxes dropped in the mailbox be looking for your next tax notice!
