Tips for a Stress-Free Relocation

Moving is not typically something that people enjoy doing as it requires lots of preparation and hard work. The moving process overall can be very stressful to some people, even if you’re just moving a short distance to the next community over from your current one.

Relocating across the country can add even more emotions and feelings.  Whether it’s to be closer to family or for a brand new job, there are many reasons people relocate and the process can be overwhelming and stressful.  While it’s unlikely a cross country relocation or relocation hours away will ever be completely stress-free and overwhelming, there are certain tips that can help make the process seem less of huge task.

It is important to understand there are things you should be doing even before you decide to relocate, during the relocation, and even after you have arrived to your new hometown. So before you agree to relocate to a new city or state here are some tips to help make your relocation easier and less stressful.

Deciding to relocate?

  • Research your new community Before moving to your new city or state, research the area so you know that to expect. Everything from crime information and data to the school districts…there is a ton of information available to help you do the research. There may be other things to research that you need to know such as local hospitals or even convenience of certain retail that is a must-have for you!
  • Research Local Real Estate Market When relocating, you will need a place to reside. Whether you plan on renting or buying a home, knowing about the local real estate market is something you should research before committing to a relocation. Finding out what apartments or homes cost to rent for a month and whether it is in your budget, these are important to research. Even if you plan on purchasing a home, housing prices and real estate taxes can vary significantly from town to town and even state to state, so it is always good to research this before committing to relocating to a certain area. Many are able to find this information online but this will lead us to our next point….

Relocation confirmed!

  • Select top notch Real Estate Agent After researching the above points and once you know the area you will be relocating to, now is the perfect time to select your top notch real estate agent to help you with this move. This is the most important tip as a good real estate agent will also be able to help advise on the research you have done already. As an expert in the area you are moving to, they will be able to guide you through the rest of the process to help make it easy and stress-free! Even if you still have a home to sell where you currently are, it is still a good idea to get in touch with a real estate agent in the area you are planning to relocate to start asking questions and getting more local information. If you are relocating for a new job, many companies will offer a relocation incentive and provide a relocation company, but if not you will then have a chance to interview potential REALTORs. With your REALTOR’s help, you will find your new home where you will live once you get there.
  • Prepare for the Move Now is the perfect time to prepare everyone in your family for the move. A move can be stressful for all, especially children and pets. You can help prepare children by showing them pictures of their new school or other neat features of your relocation destination. Making it exciting will help them see past the sad part of leaving current school and friends. Gather records for your move from doctors and schools. Do the same for your pets by gathering vet records needed and research local vets in your new community to make the move. Last but not least, prepare yourself for the move. Mentally prep for the exciting journey ahead!
  • Hire that moving company Just like a top notch real estate agent, it is important to hire a top notch moving company to entrust all of your belongings to whether they will be helping to pack and move or just move it all. Worrying about your belongings arriving safely at your new destination is something you should not have to deal with and hiring a top quality moving company will ensure this happens. Now is also a good time to go through your home to see what you can organize or clean out before moving…go ahead and de-clutter and only take what you must!

 You have arrived, now what?

  • Make it feel like home While the majority of the stressful tasks are completed, you can help ease the stress after arrival by unpacking to help make your new home feel like home. Bringing out pieces that you last saw in your old home will help ease the stress of what just happened and give you that sense of home needed to explore your new community.
  • New address blast Don’t forget to let all of your friends and family know of your move and new address. Of course, the first place to do this is at the United States Postal Service, which will help with mail forwarding but sending out a “just moved” card or email helps too and makes it more official. There are many other business tasks to handle once moved like vehicle registration (if in new state), registering kids in new school, new doctors, and banks…but don’t forget, your top notch REALTOR is with you every step of the way and can continue to be a source of information and help.
